PIL Case Details

This PIL prays for the enforcement of rights of prisons lodged in jails across the state, who have been subjected to gross violation of their human rights while in custody, and deprived of their fundamental rights to equality before the law, right to life and personal liberty such as the right to speedy trial, right to legal counsel, right against custodial torture, right to information, right to privacy etc. The petitioners raise important concerns regarding the condition of prisons, such as the lack of legal aid advocates, arrears of labouring convicts, bottlenecks in purchase of essential medicines and non - maintenance of good sanitation, non - installation of payphones, custodial excesses and torture, and prolonged incarceration, among others.
