PIL Case Details

This PIL seeks a declaration inter alia of Mangalajodi Bird Sanctuary as a ‘silent zone’ and imposing restrictions on movement of motor boats in that part of the lake which attracts lakhs of migratory birds round the year. The petitioners contended that It was stated that this was never the earlier practice a nd such motor boats ought to be prohibited since it disturbed the migratory birds which arrive in great numbers to Mangaljodi every year during the winter season. On 6 th April 2022, an affidavit was filed by the Deputy Director of Fisheries (Marine), Cutta ck stating that discussions were going on with the Fishermen Community and other stake holders for taking appropriate decision on enforcing the ban on the motorized fishing vessels in the sub - channels of Mangalajodi area of Chilika lake.
