PIL Case Details

The genesis of the present petition is an article dated 4 th February 2021, reflecting the deteriorating status of Olive Ridely turtles. The High Court took suo moto cognisance of this matter. The said article specifically highlighted the death of 800 Olive Ridley turtles in January 2021, in the Gahirmatha marine sanctuary, the world's largest rockery of this endangered species. The Court recognised concerns of death and injuries to Olive Ridleys, from being tra pped in trawl or gill fishing nets. Through its order dated 26 th February 2021, the Court constituted a three member committee to see whether the directions regarding Olive Ridley turtles issued in previous judgements were being complied with. Through its order dated 15 th March, 2021, the Court adopted the recommendations of the committee.
