This writ petition has been clubbed with a batch of writ petitions, raising concerns regarding the threats posed to the bio - diversity and ecology of the Chilika Lake on account of unregulated, indiscriminate fishing including the large - scale production of shrimps/prawns on the commercial side. According to the report submitted by the amicus curiae, there appears to be six issues before the Court – illegal prawn/shrimp culture in the Chilika area, pollution, uncontrolled boat operation and oil spills, silation, depletion of mangrove forests of Bhitarkanika National Park and poaching. The Court took up the first issue, by order dated 30.10 .2017. Through its order dated 14.08.2021, the Court directed authorities to demolish all the illegal structures and earthen gheries including illegal hatcheries that exist within the prohibited area of Chilika lake and coming within the ambit of the CAA Act as well as the CRZ Zone.
